An initiative of the World Happiness Foundation, in consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC. Complementary to, and independent of, SSI, PADI, CMAS and RAID. ## What is Mindful Diving™? Source: https://mindfuldivinginstitute.com/what-is-mindful-diving Mindful Diving™ is the first international standard uniting recreational diving, mindfulness and the science of wellbeing, adding a practice of presence before, during and after every dive without replacing your diving agency. **In short:** Mindful Diving™ is the first international standard uniting recreational diving, mindfulness and the science of wellbeing. It adds a practice of presence before, during and after every dive, across five levels (MD-1 to MD-5), without replacing your agency. It is governed by the Mindful Diving Institute, an initiative of the World Happiness Foundation. ### The definition, in one sentence Mindful diving means diving with your whole attention on what is happening: your breath, your buddy, the water and the life around you. Mindful Diving™ turns that idea into a standard with a method, levels, verifiable credentials and measurement. ### Where it comes from Mindful Diving™ is an initiative of the World Happiness Foundation, in consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC, aligned with SDG 3 (Good Health & Wellbeing) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). It is governed by the Mindful Diving Institute, which holds the standard, curriculum, instructor training and research, with a Standards Council, a Safety & Dive Medicine Board and a Research Council. The collaborating research authority is the Chair in Contemplative Sciences at the University of Zaragoza. The founder is Luis Miguel Gallardo, Founder & President of the World Happiness Foundation. ### The arc: Before · Below · Between · Beyond - **Before** — Intention and grounding: slow breathing, an unhurried equipment check and one intention for the dive. - **Below** — Presence in the water: attention to breath, buddy and surroundings, only in stable phases and never during descents, ascents or gas management. - **Between** — The surface interval: reflection and integration between dives. - **Beyond** — Transfer to daily life: what you learned underwater, carried onto land. ### The levels The personal pathway has five levels: MD-1 Mindful Diver™, MD-2 Advanced Mindful Diver™, MD-3 Mindful Dive Leader™, MD-4 Mindful Dive Instructor™ and MD-5 Mindful Dive Instructor Trainer™. Master Mindful Diver™ is the pinnacle recognition of the recreational path. Specialties such as Mindful Breath™ are optional and can be taken at any level. ### What it is not It is not a diving agency and does not replace your training. It is complementary to, and independent of, PADI, SSI, CMAS, RAID and other agencies: every practice fits inside your agency's standards and your dive plan. It is not therapy or medical treatment, and it never includes breath-holding or intense breathing techniques on scuba. ### The evidence Measured, not assumed. The Institute's living review screened 138 papers and cites 62 on diving, mindfulness, wellbeing and the ocean (DOI 10.68220/mdi.2026.004). Programs measure their effect with validated instruments such as the FP20 Fundamental Peace scale. ### How to start 1. Create your free account and begin MD-1 Mindful Diver™ online. 2. Published openly, versioned, and free to read. ### 1. Purpose & scope Mindful Diving™ is the first international standard uniting recreational diving, mindfulness and the science of wellbeing. This document defines what the standard requires — of divers, of instructors, of centers — so that anyone can read it, teach against it, audit it or challenge it. - In scope: attention, breathing above and below water, pre-dive intention, surface-interval reflection, instructor wellbeing, ocean ethics, and the assessment of all of these. - Out of scope: dive safety procedures, gas planning, decompression theory, equipment configuration and rescue protocol — these belong to the diver's agency. - Explicitly out of scope: therapy, clinical mindfulness, psychological treatment, medical advice or any claim of cure. ### 2. Definitions - **Institute** — The Mindful Diving Institute — the governing body holding the standard, the curriculum, instructor training and research. - **Standards Council** — The body that approves every published version of this standard. - **Safety & Dive Medicine Board** — The body that reviews every practice and every piece of safety language before publication. - **Research Council** — The body that governs measurement, instruments and the publication of evidence. - **Mindful diver** — A certified diver holding a current Mindful Diving credential at MD-1 or above. - **Mindful Diving Center™** — A dive center certified by the Institute against the center requirements in §7. - **Practice** — A named, teachable attention or breathing exercise defined by the Institute and reviewed by the Safety & Dive Medicine Board. - **Safety-critical item** — An assessment item whose failure cannot be compensated by performance elsewhere (§6.3). - **Shall / should / may** — "Shall" is a requirement. "Should" is a recommendation. "May" is permitted. ### 3. The Seven Pillars The pillars are normative. Every course, every center audit and every credential is traceable to them. They are never reordered and never renamed. - 1 · Safety & Excellence — the practice shall never reduce margin. Where presence and procedure appear to compete, procedure wins, and the practice returns afterwards. - 2 · Mindful Experience — the dive shall be taught as an experience of attention, not only a set of skills. Briefings shall name what the diver is invited to notice. - 3 · Instructor Wellbeing — instructors shall be treated as the load-bearing element they are: workload, rest, and the right to stop are part of the standard, not a courtesy. - 4 · Ocean Connection — divers shall be taught no-contact ethics, buoyancy as care, and the ocean as teacher rather than backdrop. - 5 · Human Connection — the buddy pair, the group and the surface interval shall be treated as the social core of the practice. - 6 · Evidence & Impact — the standard measures rather than assumes; claims shall be traceable to instruments or withdrawn. - 7 · Happiness Leadership — those who hold the standard shall carry it outward: into their centers, their communities and their coastlines. ### 4. The practice arc Every Mindful Diving practice is placed in one of four phases. Placement is a safety decision as much as a pedagogical one. - **Before** — Intention and grounding. On the surface, in the briefing, in the kit-up. Practices here shall be complete before the diver enters the water. - **Below** — Presence in the water. Slow, continuous breathing; open awareness; buoyancy as attention. No practice shall be introduced during a task-critical phase. - **Between** — The surface interval. Reflection, integration, and the conversation the dive left behind — the most under-used hour in diving. - **Beyond** — Transfer to daily life. What the water taught, carried home; what home carries back to the water. ### 4.1. The practice models The eight practice models are stated here in their canonical form. Every card, lesson, script or center material reproduces these words exactly. - **A — ACKNOWLEDGE** — your current state without trying to improve it. - **R — RELEASE** — unnecessary tension: jaw, shoulders, hands. - **R — READ** — the environment: water, wind, entry, exit, team. - **I — INTENTION** — one behaviour you will practise on this dive. - **V — VERIFY** — with your buddy and the plan. - **E — ENTER** — with the plan and not ahead of it. - **BODY** — illness, pain, fatigue, cold, hydration, equalisation history. - **MIND** — attention, pressure, fear, urgency, distraction, willingness. - **SKILL** — recency, conditions, task load, equipment familiarity, honest confidence. - **CONTEXT** — weather, site, team, plan, time pressure. - A sign that I may need a pause is… - The best way to get my full attention underwater is… - A concern I want to be able to say early is… - When either of us ends the dive, we agree to… - One environmental behaviour we will protect together is… - **NOTICE** — what is happening right now in body, breathing, task, buddy, environment? - **NAME** — a light label, not a verdict. - **CHOOSE** — the safest useful response available inside your training. - **RETURN** — re-open awareness; do not stay locked on the problem you just solved. - **SELF** — breathing, comfort, temperature, equalisation, workload. - **GAS & DEPTH** — pressure, time, depth, ascent obligations, limits. - **BUDDY** — position, signals, state, shared plan, proximity. - **ROUTE & CONDITIONS** — direction, current, visibility, exit. - **ENVIRONMENT** — life, hazards, fragility, other divers. - **S — STOP adding** — cease the non-essential task; stabilise position and buoyancy. - **T — TOUCH the anchor** — one point of contact — the regulator in your teeth, the inflator in your hand, the exhale leaving. - **I — IDENTIFY out of the tunnel** — gas, depth, buddy, exit — four facts, in that order. - **L — LINK** — signal your buddy or leader now, at amber, not later at red. - **L — LISTEN** — to the breath as information, and to the fear's actual message — signal, story, or cargo? - **DEDICATE** — the dive to someone or something on the surface, before the descent — then attend to the descent itself. - **THREE** — ordinary breaths, simply noticed once you are neutral — continuous, nothing lengthened or forced. - **ONE STILL MINUTE** — of quiet noticing at a stable point, when the dive plan and your buddy allow — never during a task. - **GRATITUDE** — after the dive, once safely out of the water — one thing you appreciated. - **F — FACTS** — what happened that a camera or an instrument could have recorded? - **F — FELT** — what did each of you notice in body, breathing, emotion, attention? - **L — LEARNED** — what helped, what narrowed awareness, what surprised you? - **N — NEXT** — the one adjustment for the next dive. ### 5. Level requirements — MD-1 to MD-5 Each level requires knowledge development, water sessions or practicum, and assessment. Knowledge development may be completed online; water sessions shall be completed in person with a qualified Mindful Diving Center™ or Instructor. ### 6. Assessment rules 6.1 — The pass mark for every final examination is 80%. ### 7. Mindful Diving Center™ requirements Centers are certified against the seven-pillar rubric. There is one Seal — Certified Mindful Diving Center™ — with one fee, one renewal and one audit: a center meets the gate, or it does not yet. ### 8. Code of conduct - Agency standards first. Where this standard and an agency standard appear to conflict, the agency standard governs and the Institute shall be notified. - Stop authority. Any diver, at any level, may end any dive or any practice at any time, for any reason or none, without explanation or consequence. - Breathing. Slow, continuous breathing only. Breath-holding, skip-breathing and hypoventilation shall never be taught or implied on scuba. - Task-critical phases. No mindfulness exercise shall be introduced during descent, ascent, gas management, navigation under load or any emergency. Safety is the first mindfulness practice. - No-contact ocean ethics. Divers shall not touch, chase, feed, ride or collect. Buoyancy is the ethic made physical. - Non-clinical scope. Mindful Diving is not therapy or medical treatment. Instructors shall not diagnose, treat or advise clinically, and shall refer when appropriate. - Psychological safety. Reflection is invited, never extracted. No diver shall be pressed to share, and what is shared in the surface interval stays there. - Honesty of marks. Credentials, the Seal and affiliations shall be represented exactly as issued. ### 9. Governance & change control 9.1 — This standard is versioned. A published version does not change; changes appear as a new version with a new date. ### A. Center Certification — The Seven-Pillar Rubric The diver-facing pillars above define the practice. The rubric below defines how a center is certified to hold it. Each rubric pillar operationalises the practice pillars at the level of an organisation. ### 10. Version history Cite: Mindful Diving Institute (2026). The Mindful Diving Standard v1.3. It holds the best diving in the western Mediterranean. This guide covers where to dive, when, at what level, and how to do it with presence. **In short:** The Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve in Murcia, Spain, was created in 1995 and protects around 1,900 hectares of shoals and wrecks. You need Open Water or equivalent; without it, try Discover Scuba with an instructor. Daily places are limited, dives go through authorised centers and the fee is €5 per diver per dive. Best season: May to November. ### Why it is called the best diving in the Mediterranean The Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve was created in 1995. It protects around 1,900 hectares around the chain of shoals running from the cape to the Hormigas Islands, including a no-take core where neither fishing nor diving is allowed. Three decades of protection have brought back something the Mediterranean had almost forgotten: large, unhurried fish. Groupers watching from their cracks, schools of barracuda turning over the shoal, dentex hunting in the current. Scientific studies of the reserve cite it as one of Europe's clearest examples of the reserve effect. It is also a place of current and depth. That is why presence here is not decoration: it is the simplest way to dive safely and to truly see what is in front of you. ### The main dive sites Depths are approximate and depend on the route your guide chooses. Always confirm them at the center's briefing. - **Bajo de Piles (I and II) · approx. 8–35 m** — Walls and boulders with gorgonians, morays and groupers. It has shallow routes suitable for Open Water divers, which makes it the ideal first dive in the Reserve. - **Bajo de Fuera · approx. 15–45 m** — The outermost shoal and the most exposed to current. Big schools of barracuda, dentex, amberjack and, in season, eagle rays. Requires Advanced or deep training. - **Bajo de la Morra · approx. 18–40 m** — A pinnacle where life gathers around the rock: groupers, brown meagre and walls covered in colour. Advanced level. - **Bajo de la Testa · approx. 15–40 m** — Spires and canyons, with good pelagic traffic when the current runs. Advanced level. - **Islas Hormigas · approx. 5–30 m** — Around the island and its lighthouse: seagrass, boulders and cracks. Routes for several levels depending on the side dived. - **Las Palomas · approx. 5–30 m** — Isla de las Palomas, near Cartagena, offers a sheltered dive full of life: octopus, morays, salema and nudibranchs. Suitable for Open Water divers. ### What you will see Large groupers, calm because of the protection. Schools of barracuda, dentex, amberjack and greater amberjack. Brown meagre, sea bream and morays in every crack. From late summer into autumn, with luck, eagle rays passing through. On the seabed, gorgonians, sponges and nudibranchs for anyone who looks slowly. The rule is simple: look, don't touch. No feeding, no chasing. The stiller you are, the closer they come. ### The wrecks of Cabo de Palos Cabo de Palos is a coast of shipwrecks. Depths are indicative; all of them require planning and experience. - **Naranjito · approx. 27–45 m** — A freighter sunk in 1979 near Bajo de Fuera, almost intact on the sand. Advanced with a deep specialty and good buoyancy control. - **Carbonero · approx. 35–45 m** — A steam cargo ship on a sandy bottom, home to conger eels and groupers. Advanced deep level. - **Sirio · approx. 40–70 m** — The Italian liner lost on Bajo de Fuera in 1906. Its depth reserves it for technical divers. - **Stanfield · approx. 55–65 m** — A freighter resting deep off the cape. Technical diving only, with specific training. ### Season and conditions The best season is May to November. Water runs from about 14 °C in spring to 26 °C in late August and September; at depth there can be a thermocline even in summer. Visibility is usually 15–30 m. Current and the easterly wind decide: some days the outer shoals cannot be dived. The center decides each morning. Bring a 5 or 7 mm wetsuit for most of the year and a hood in spring. ### What level you need With Open Water you can dive the shallow routes of Bajo de Piles and Las Palomas. Bajo de Fuera, la Morra, la Testa and the Naranjito and Carbonero wrecks need Advanced or a deep specialty, and the center will consider your recent experience. Sirio and Stanfield are technical dives. If you have not dived for a while, start with a refresher. It is not a test: it is how you arrive at the shoal calm. ### How to get there Cabo de Palos sits at the southern end of La Manga del Mar Menor, in the Region of Murcia. By car: 25 minutes from Cartagena, 50 minutes from Murcia, 1 h 20 from Alicante and about 4 hours from Madrid. The nearest airports are Región de Murcia (Corvera) and Alicante-Elche. ### Marine Reserve fees The Reserve applies a fee of €5 per diver per dive, paid at the dive center. The number of daily divers is limited, and dives are booked in advance through authorised centers. ### Our participating center: Planeta Azul Planeta Azul is the Mindful Diving™ participating center in Cabo de Palos. It dives the Reserve every day and hosts our first event, Diving into Presence. Paseo Dimas Ortega 24, 30370 Cabo de Palos · +34 968 56 45 32 · Instagram @planetaazul_cabodepalos. ### Diving the Reserve with presence The Mindful Diving™ arc has four phases. It fits entirely inside your dive plan and your agency's standards. - **Before · intention and grounding** — On the boat, heading out to the shoal: three slow breaths, an unhurried buddy check and one simple intention for the dive. - **Below · presence in the water** — When stable and conditions allow, notice the marine life without touching or pursuing it. Breathe naturally and continuously as trained. Keep your buddy, gas, depth and route in view; leave the observation whenever the dive needs your attention. - **Between · the surface interval** — Between dives, on the boat facing the lighthouse: a few minutes of quiet and one line in your logbook about what you truly saw. - **Beyond · back on land** — Take one thing into daily life: the way you breathed into the current, or the grouper's patience. ### Next date ### Keep exploring ### Frequently asked questions **Do I need a certification to dive in Cabo de Palos?** To dive the Reserve you need a recognised scuba certification (Open Water or equivalent), and the center will ask for your card and logbook. Without one you can do a Discover Scuba dive with an instructor. The deeper shoals and the wrecks require Advanced or a deep specialty. **When is the best time to dive Cabo de Palos?** May to November. Water runs from about 14 °C in spring to 26 °C in late summer, and visibility is usually 15–30 m. September to November pairs warm water with fewer people. **How much does it cost to dive the Marine Reserve?** On top of the dive price charged by the center, the Reserve applies a fee of €5 per diver per dive, paid at the center. Daily places are limited to protect the seabed. **Can I try scuba (Discover Scuba) in Cabo de Palos?** Yes. Try dives take place in shallow, sheltered areas with an instructor beside you. Our Discover Scuba with presence is a full day with two dives and a practice before and after, and it counts toward MD-1. **What is mindful diving?** Mindful Diving™ is the first international standard uniting recreational diving, mindfulness and the science of wellbeing. It does not replace your agency: it adds a presence practice before, during and after every dive. > On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. ## Diving in Murcia: one coast, five ways down Source: https://mindfuldivinginstitute.com/waters/murcia Murcia's coast runs from the still lagoon of the Mar Menor to the open shoals of Cabo de Palos and the cliffs of Águilas. Here are the areas, the seasons and where to begin. **In short:** Murcia's best diving is in the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, with groupers, barracuda and wrecks, and a €5 fee per dive. For calm dives suited to Open Water divers, choose Isla de las Palomas in Cartagena, Mazarrón or Águilas. Without a certification, you can start with Discover Scuba guided by an instructor. ### The Region's diving areas - **Cabo de Palos and Islas Hormigas** — The Marine Reserve, created in 1995: shoals with groupers, barracuda and dentex, plus historic wrecks. The Region's most famous diving and the reason many divers come to Murcia. - **Cartagena and Isla de las Palomas** — A coast of coves and cliffs with sheltered rocky reefs. Isla de las Palomas is a calm dive full of life, suitable for Open Water divers. - **La Manga and Isla Grosa** — Off La Manga, Isla Grosa and the El Farallón islet offer walls, Posidonia meadows and rich fixed life. Short boat rides. - **Mazarrón** — A sheltered bay with varied bottoms, seagrass and archaeological remains in the area: a good place to dive slowly and learn to look at small things. - **Águilas** — At the southern end of the Region: coves, islets and rocky bottoms with often very clear water, and a quieter feel than the northern coast. - **Mar Menor** — Europe's largest saltwater lagoon: warm, shallow water, shore entries and an ecosystem in recovery that is dived with particular care. ### Seasons You can dive year-round, but the best open-sea season runs May to November, with water from about 14 °C in spring to 26 °C in late summer. Autumn pairs warm water, good visibility and fewer people. The Mar Menor is warmer and calmer than the open sea, though its visibility varies with algae and rain. The easterly wind can close the outer shoals on some days. Sheltered areas such as Las Palomas or Mazarrón usually offer an alternative. ### How the Reserve differs The whole coast has good diving, but the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve is another scale. Three decades without fishing have brought back large, calm fish — rare in the Mediterranean. In return it has rules: limited daily places, dives only with authorised centers and a fee of €5 per diver per dive. It also asks more: current, depth and good buoyancy control. Start with the shallow routes and leave the outer shoals and wrecks for when you have the level. ### Diving Murcia with presence The Mindful Diving™ arc — Before · Below · Between · Beyond — applies as much to a quiet Mar Menor dive as to a current-swept shoal at Cabo de Palos. Always inside your dive plan and your agency's standards. ### Next date ### Frequently asked questions **Where is the best diving in Murcia?** The Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve is the best known for marine life. For calm dives, Isla de las Palomas in Cartagena, Mazarrón and Águilas are excellent. **When is the best time to dive in Murcia?** May to November in the open sea, with water from about 14 to 26 °C. Autumn usually offers the best mix of temperature, visibility and calm. **Can I dive in Murcia without a certification?** Yes, with a Discover Scuba dive led by an instructor in shallow, sheltered areas. To dive with a guide you need a recognised certification. **Do I have to pay to dive the Cabo de Palos Reserve?** Yes. On top of the center's price, the Reserve applies a fee of €5 per diver per dive, paid at the center. > On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. ## Breathing awareness: on land and on scuba Source: https://mindfuldivinginstitute.com/learn/mindful-breath Notice your breathing without imposing a rhythm. In the water, keep breathing naturally and continuously as trained, with attention available for diving tasks. **In short:** On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. ### Why ventilation comes first Breathing serves gas exchange, not a calmness score. Effort, depth, equipment and health can affect breathing. Reducing ventilation to save gas can allow carbon dioxide to accumulate. Learn efficient movement and buoyancy with your instructor; never ration breaths. Research on slow breathing in land-based settings does not establish a breathing rate for scuba. Keep land exercises separate from underwater practice; comfort, ventilation and the demands of the dive come first. ### A gentle pause on dry land On dry land, pause somewhere secure. Notice an ordinary breath, then look around and check in with your buddy. No counting, forced depth or pauses are needed. Keep the equipment check and dive briefing complete. Practise breathing exercises on dry land, in a safe place, without forced ventilation or breath-holds. Stop if uncomfortable or dizzy. Do not use intense breathwork to prepare for immersion. No fixed waiting interval makes it safe. Underwater, follow the shared scuba guidance. ### Underwater: attention for the dive On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. Diving can feel absorbing, but it also adds demands on attention. Keep checking gas, depth, buoyancy, your buddy and the environment. Feeling calm does not by itself show that a diver is safe or ready. Talk about concerns before entering the water and agree how to pause or end the dive. Breathing difficulty can have physical causes; do not assume it is anxiety. Underwater, signal your buddy and follow your training and emergency procedures. ### After the dive: learn together Once safely out of the water, share one observation, one concern and one thing to change next time. Listen before interpreting. A useful debrief ends with a specific, realistic action. ### Three books. Three ways to deepen your practice. Mindful Diving develops attention and the wider practice through MD-1 to MD-5. Mindful Breath explores breathing awareness. The Diving Mind explores fear, doubt and decisions. The specialties are optional and purchased separately; none replaces agency training or rescue skills. ### Breathing and diving: frequently asked questions **Should I slow my breathing to save gas?** Breathing serves gas exchange, not a calmness score. Effort, depth, equipment and health can affect breathing. Reducing ventilation to save gas can allow carbon dioxide to accumulate. Learn efficient movement and buoyancy with your instructor; never ration breaths. **Are timed breathing pauses part of this practice?** Practise breathing exercises on dry land, in a safe place, without forced ventilation or breath-holds. Stop if uncomfortable or dizzy. Do not use intense breathwork to prepare for immersion. No fixed waiting interval makes it safe. Underwater, follow the shared scuba guidance. > Keep every practice within your training, agency standards and dive plan. Emergency procedures take priority. Anyone may decline a practice or end a dive. This is education, not therapy, medical clearance or agency endorsement. ## Scuba diving hand signals Source: https://mindfuldivinginstitute.com/hand-signals ### The essential five - **OK** — Both a question and an answer. Asked, it must be answered — silence is not an OK. How: Thumb and index finger joined in a circle, the other three fingers extended. With gloves or at distance, arm over the head in a circle. - **Not OK / problem** — Something is off. Say it early, at amber, not late at red. How: Flat hand, palm down, rocked side to side, then point at what is wrong. - **Up / end the dive** — An instruction, not an opinion. Any diver may end any dive, at any time, without giving a reason. How: Closed fist, thumb up. - **Down / descend** — Begin or continue the descent, at the agreed rate. How: Closed fist, thumb down. - **Stop / hold** — Stop adding tasks and stabilise here. The most under-used signal in diving. How: Flat open palm facing the buddy. ### Gas and pressure - **How much gas?** — Answer with numbers, honestly and immediately. How: Flat hand tapped twice against the open palm of the other hand, or two fingers to the palm. - **Half / turn pressure** — The turn point of the dive plan has arrived. How: Flat hand held horizontally at chest height, or the agreed number shown on fingers. - **Low on gas** — Reserve reached. Begin the ascent plan now, together. How: Closed fist to the centre of the chest. - **Out of gas** — An emergency. Follow the out-of-gas procedure you trained with your agency and rehearsed with this buddy. How: Flat hand drawn across the throat. - **Share gas** — Give me your alternate air source. Practised on land, then in shallow water, before it is needed. How: Fingers of a flat hand brought to the mouth, then reaching toward the buddy's alternate. ### Direction, depth and pace - **Look / watch me** — Direct your attention here. How: Two fingers pointed toward your own eyes, then toward the object. - **Come here** — Close the distance to me. How: Palm up, fingers curling toward you. - **Go that way** — The agreed heading. How: Flat hand held vertically, fingers pointing in the direction of travel. - **Which direction?** — I am not sure of the route. Show me the way. How: Index finger raised and circled, then both palms turned up. - **Slow down** — Reduce pace and workload. Almost always the right answer. How: Flat hand, palm down, pressed gently downward. - **Level off / stay at this depth** — Hold this depth. How: Flat hand, palm down, held steady and horizontal. - **Safety stop** — Follow the stop depth and duration in your training, dive plan and computer guidance. Maintain buoyancy, monitor gas and stay with your buddy. A stop is part of the ascent; do not add breathing exercises or close your eyes. How: Three fingers raised over a flat horizontal hand: three minutes, five metres. - **Turn the dive** — Turn around and head back along the planned route. How: Index finger pointing up, circled horizontally. - **Stay together** — Close the distance and dive as a pair. How: Two index fingers held side by side. - **Hold hands** — Let's hold on to each other. How: Both hands clasped together, fingers interlocked. ### Problems and the body - **Ear problem** — Equalisation is not working. Stop the descent, ascend slightly, try again gently. Never force. How: Point to the ear. - **Cold** — Thermal reserve is going. Cold is a common quiet cause of anxiety and short dives. How: Arms crossed over the chest, hands rubbing the upper arms. - **Cramp** — Stop, stretch, let the buddy help. How: Two fists brought together and pulled apart. - **Breathing check-in** — On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. How: Flat hand moved slowly up and down in front of the chest. - **Dizzy / disoriented** — Hold on to something stable, hold depth, signal the buddy and end the dive if it persists. How: Index finger circled beside the head. - **Danger** — Something here can hurt us. Keep clear. How: Forearm raised, fist clenched, then point to the hazard. ### At the surface and the boat - **Surface OK** — I am fine, for the boat or a buddy at distance. How: One arm over the head, fingertips touching the top of the head. - **Surface distress** — I need help. Come and get me. How: One arm waved slowly from side to side above the water. - **Boat** — Boat overhead, or back to the boat. How: Both hands cupped together like the hull of a boat. ### Marine life - **Shark** — A shark is nearby. How: Flat hand held upright on the forehead, like a dorsal fin. - **Turtle** — A turtle is here. How: One hand flat on the back of the other, thumbs circling like flippers. - **Octopus** — An octopus is here. How: Fingers pointing down from a fist, wriggling like arms. - **Ray / eagle ray** — A ray on the sand, or an eagle ray in open water. How: Both flat hands overlapped, flapping slowly like wings. - **Moray eel** — A moray is in that hole. How: Hand opening and closing slowly, like a mouth. - **Barracuda** — Barracuda, alone or in a school. How: Flat hand held vertically in front of the chest, chopped sideways. - **Grouper (mero)** — A grouper is nearby. How: Hand cupped under the chin, fingers opening like a big mouth. - **Lobster** — A lobster is in that crack. How: Index and middle finger raised and flexed at the forehead, like antennae. - **Nudibranch** — A nudibranch here. Come close, slowly. How: Two fingers raised on the back of the other hand, which crawls slowly. - **Lionfish / venomous** — Venomous spines. Look, never touch. How: Fingers spread and pointing down from the wrist of the other arm, like spines. ### Mindful Diving™ signals - **The Amber Word** — I am not in trouble, and I am not fine. Slow down, stay close, check me again in a minute. How: Flat hand tilted side to side, then the OK question. Agreed in the Buddy Agreement before entry. - **Breathe with me** — Notice your breathing without imposing a rhythm. In the water, keep breathing naturally and continuously as trained, with attention available for diving tasks. How: Use the hand movement agreed in the briefing; it does not prescribe a breathing rhythm. - **Pause here** — Hover and observe here for a few breaths. How: Flat palm down held still, then two fingers to the eyes. - **I'm present** — All good, outside and inside. How: Open palm over the heart, then the OK sign. - **Turn the dive, no questions** — I want to turn back. No reason needed, no pressure given. How: The turn signal, then a flat palm lifted gently toward the buddy. - **Settle** — Nothing is wrong. Take one breath here before the next task. The in-water form of STILL. How: Open palm lowered slowly, held still for one full breath cycle. - **Notice this** — Not a fish or a hazard — the whole scene. An invitation to look wide for a moment. How: Two fingers to the eyes, then held open toward the water rather than at an object. ## Diving into Presence Source: https://mindfuldivinginstitute.com/events/diving-into-presence The Cabo de Palos Marine Reserve — the finest diving in the Mediterranean — becomes a classroom of presence. 6–9 November 2026. - Dates: 6–9 November 2026 · Friday to Monday - Location: Cabo de Palos, Murcia - **Diving into Presence — 1 Day** — Saturday 7 November, 4–5 hours, €199. Mindful Breath™ is a specialty: it deepens the breath dimension at whichever level you stand, or before you certify at all. It is never required to advance. **How much does a course cost?** Each level is a one-time payment: MD-1 €111, MD-2 €111, MD-3 €222, MD-4 €333, MD-5 €555 — or all five as the Whole Descent for €999. There are no subscriptions and no hidden renewal fees for the eLearning itself. **Is my access lifetime, or does it expire?** Once you enroll, your access to the course materials is yours for life. Your certification itself is revalidated every three years to keep the standard current — the study materials remain open regardless. **What if I'm not ready to continue after paying?** Life happens, and the course waits for you — there is no time limit to finish. If something has genuinely gone wrong with your purchase, our refund policy explains what qualifies and how to request one. **Where can I read the full refund policy?** The complete terms live on our refunds page, linked from the footer of every page. **Do I need to be a certified diver to start MD-1?** MD-1 is open to any certified diver, or a diver-in-training completing an Open Water course from a recognized agency. It is the entry point of the pathway. **Can I skip ahead to a higher level?** No. MD-2 through MD-5 each require the previous Mindful Diving™ level, since the pathway builds skill and judgement in sequence. **What does the attestation checkbox actually confirm?** Before enrolling in MD-2 and above, you confirm that you currently hold the prerequisite Mindful Diving™ level (or verified equivalent) and that you are medically fit to dive under your own agency's standards. It is a statement of fact, not a formality. **What happens if I attest incorrectly?** Certification is a matter of trust between you, your agency and the water. Misrepresenting a prerequisite can void your credential and, more importantly, puts you and your buddies at risk. **Does finishing the online course make me certified?** The online course builds your knowledge: modules, checks and a final exam. Full certification completes in the water with a Mindful Diving Center™, where an instructor confirms your practice on real dives. **What actually happens during the water sessions?** On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. **Is breath-holding part of any exercise?** On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task. **Could a mindfulness cue ever interfere with a critical moment?** No. Attention practices are never introduced during task-critical phases such as descents, ascents or gas management. Agency procedures and dive safety always come first. **How do I redeem a code from my dive center?** On your course overview page, open "Redeem a center code" and enter the seat code your center gave you. Your seat opens immediately. **Does the center see my progress if I redeem a code?** Yes — redeeming a center code shares your name, your course progress and your resulting credential with the center sponsoring you. No one outside that center sees it. **What if I paid directly instead of using a code?** If you enroll without a center code, your progress is private to you — no center is notified unless you redeem a code with them. **What can a center see on its dashboard?** Centers manage their own view at /learn/center — cohorts, seat codes issued, and the progress of divers who redeemed one of their codes. **What do I receive when I finish a level?** A digital credential with a unique credential ID, individually addressable and revalidated every three years to keep the standard current. **How can anyone check that my certification is real?** Anyone can enter your credential ID at /verify to confirm it, or scan the QR code printed directly on your certificate. **Can I carry my certification on my phone?** Yes. Every credential is also available as a digital wallet card, ready to show at a dive center without printing anything. **Is every course available in Spanish?** Yes. Every Mindful Diving™ course, from MD-1 to MD-5, is fully available in both English and Castilian Spanish — modules, exams and certificates alike. **Can I switch languages partway through a course?** Yes, at any time. Your progress is preserved regardless of which language you read a module in. **Which language will my certificate be issued in?** Your certificate reflects the language of your account locale at the time it is issued, and is verifiable regardless of language at /verify.
