The Mindful Diving Institute mark: the vesica and the sounding line

Mindful Diving

Institute

Standards · Research · Training

Every standard needs a keeper.

The Mindful Diving Institute is the standards, research and training body of Mindful Diving™, established by the World Happiness Foundation. It exists so that a diver in the Canary Islands and a diver in the Red Sea meet the same practice, held to the same evidence.

The Water Gallery

A giant anemone opening like an eye on the reef.
A diver alone in a pale blue cave chamber.
Fish circling a pinnacle in a slow blue vortex.
A small silver school suspended in dim open water.
A cavern opening with light and fish streaming in.
The water surface seen from below, a silver mirror with rising bubbles.

The standard, published

A standard you cannot read is not a standard.

The Mindful Diving Standard v1.0 is published openly and versioned: normative pillars, the practice arc, MD-1 to MD-5 requirements, center criteria, code of conduct and change control.

The source text

Everything we teach descends from one book.

“Mindful Diving — The Ocean Was Teaching Us All Along” is the Institute’s source text. The Standard turns it into requirements; MD-1 to MD-5 turn it into practice; the Seal turns it into a place you can dive.

What the Institute does

MINDFUL DIVING INSTITUTESTANDARDS · RESEARCH · TRAINING

Research

Coordinates measurement, ethics review and academic collaboration across the network. The research agenda is aligned with the e-co-flourishing framework (The Lancet Planetary Health, 2026), which links human flourishing with the flourishing of ecosystems.

Read the framework

Publish

Releases the annual report: anonymised outcomes from every participating center, whatever they show.

Standards

Writes, versions and publishes the standard, its teaching materials and the seven-pillar rubric.

Certification

Issues the five diver levels and the Mindful Diving Center™ seal, and audits every seal on site.

Alliances

Opens the standard to agencies, universities and conservation organisations who want to adopt or test it.

Conservation

Holds the ocean commitments of Pillar 4 and the stewardship reporting that goes with them.

Built to be adopted

The standard is designed open. It is written so that an existing agency — PADI, SSI, CMAS, RAID or any other — could adopt it as a distinctive specialty without changing a single safety rule, and so that a university can test it as a research protocol. There is no agreement with any agency today; this is design intent and an open invitation. Our research anchor is the Cátedra de Ciencias Contemplativas at the Universidad de Zaragoza, and we are equally open to conservation partners.

A quiet game

The Sacred Waters Challenge

Nine waters from the Atlas, one for each of the Nine Paths in Nine Paths to One, our founder's contemplative saga. An egg to carry, a mantra to keep, a stone to leave. Always inside your dive plan.

Enter the nine waters

The Institute exists to make Mindful Diving the world reference for ocean wellbeing through diving.

The ecosystem behind the standard.

A standard is only as strong as the institutions that hold it.

These bodies advise and anchor the Institute; the Institute holds the standard.

Governance

Three councils hold the standard. All are now forming; advisory invitations are open.

Standards Council

Owns the curriculum, the seven-pillar rubric and the certification requirements.

Safety & Dive Medicine Board

Reviews every practice against diving physiology and agency safety standards. Nothing reaches a diver without its sign-off.

Research Council

Designs the measurement programme, reviews ethics and oversees publication.

Advisory invitations are open

We are seeking experts in dive medicine, contemplative science, marine conservation and the diving industry to join the councils shaping this standard.

Open standard, protected marks

The framework is published openly: anyone may read the seven pillars, the practice arc and the safety rules, and any center may improve because of them. The seals and credentials are another matter — Mindful Diving Center™, the five diver levels and the Instructor Academy marks are awarded only by the Institute, and only after assessment. That is what keeps the mark worth carrying.
