MD-3

Start here

Develop clear briefings, sound dive decisions and a culture where people can speak up. Practise leadership within your existing diving qualifications; the course does not grant a professional agency rating.

What you will be able to do

  • Brief roles, limits, communication and the right to stop before entry.
  • Observe group behaviour without diagnosing emotions, and adapt the plan within safe limits.
  • Lead a factual debrief and document evidence of your leadership practice.

How the course works

13 chapters · 40 practical readings and tools. Allow additional time for exercises, portfolio work and supervised assessments.

Read the objective, practise the steps and try a scenario with explained feedback. These practice checks do not affect your grade. Further reflection and the original lesson audio are optional. Study at your own pace; agree the practical schedule with your centre.

Rehearse spoken phrases on land. Underwater, use the trained signals you agreed before entry.

What you need to complete

Complete all lessons and answer every chapter-check question correctly; retries are allowed. The practical guide does not replace the exam or supervised evidence.

Final exam: 90% and every safety-critical question correct. If you pass with any wrong answers, you walk each missed item and acknowledge it before the credential is issued. Attempts are unlimited.

Four supervised leadership dives and the required leadership portfolio.

Anyone may delay, skip or end a dive at any time, without shame and without having to justify it. If your buddy signals to end, confirm and end together following the plan.

Safety boundary. Your dive plan, limits and agency procedures take priority. On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained, without breath-holding or imposed patterns. Breathing difficulty requires trained safety procedures; it must not be treated as simply an emotion. This course is not therapy and does not extend your diving qualifications.

Practical plan: goals and checklist for each dive

Leadership dive 1 — Briefing & teach-back

Learning goal: Lead a usable briefing and check that real divers understand it.

Before entry: Observer and candidate agree the rubric, real group, formation and teach-back question before the dive.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. Briefing included teach-back, and the response was acted on.

Observed evidence: Observe a diver explain the plan/signals back in their own words and the leader correct or adapt the briefing based on the answer.

  2. Formation planned and re-read at the first phase change.

Observed evidence: Observe the planned formation checked at the first phase change and adjusted for actual spacing and conditions.

  3. Observed against the rubric, not assessed from memory.

Observed evidence: Write an observation against each relevant published rubric domain while observing; identify any unobserved domain for follow-up.

  4. Same-day feedback received in no-blame form.

Observed evidence: Observe same-day factual, no-blame feedback and record one agreed next action with an owner.

Leadership dive 2 — Formation & phase changes

Learning goal: Keep the group coordinated through phase changes.

Before entry: Brief formation, phase changes, gas-check signals and PAUSE on land; optional practice never interrupts a critical task.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. Formation re-read at each phase change.

Observed evidence: At each actual phase change, observe the leader check the group and adjust formation when conditions call for it.

  2. Group spacing and gas checks led without raising task load.

Observed evidence: Observe spacing and normal gas-check communication without extra drills or distraction from the dive plan.

  3. A PAUSE opened before momentum forced it.

Observed evidence: Observe an early decision to pause or simplify when appropriate. If no trigger arises, use a surface case discussion and label it as such; do not claim an unobserved underwater response.

  4. Debrief began with facts and ended with an owned action.

Observed evidence: After recovery, record a factual group event, the leadership response and one owned improvement.

Leadership dive 3 — Stop authority under load

Learning goal: Honour a stop request and make a safe group decision.

Before entry: Agree a benign stop rehearsal within the agency plan, observer role and support; never create a real emergency to assess leadership.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. A stop signal acknowledged and the group stabilised before any question.

Observed evidence: Observe acknowledgement of the stop and group stabilisation before questions in the agreed safe scenario.

  2. Decision made and communicated inside the agency dive plan.

Observed evidence: Record the leader’s decision and how it stayed within the agency plan and procedures; discuss the rationale on land.

  3. Care shown for the diver who called it.

Observed evidence: Observe practical support and respectful treatment of the person calling stop, without pressure to continue.

  4. Written observation recorded for the portfolio.

Observed evidence: Review the portfolio account against the observer’s facts; identify evidence, decision, effect and next action.

Leadership dive 4 — Integrated practicum

Learning goal: Lead the full practicum and present a defensible evidence file.

Before entry: Review earlier evidence gaps and the published leadership rubric; agree the real group and observer plan.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. Full leadership arc led end to end under observation.

Observed evidence: Observe the candidate lead preparation, in-water coordination, adaptation and same-day debrief with real divers.

  2. Every rubric domain evidenced by specific, visible behaviour.

Observed evidence: Cross-reference every published rubric domain to a dated observation; mark missing evidence explicitly and arrange further observation.

  3. Leadership portfolio assembled and submitted.

Observed evidence: Check the submitted portfolio is complete and consistent with observed dives, including decisions and follow-up actions.

  4. Certification decision discussed with the observer.

Observed evidence: Discuss and record the decision under the existing certification rule with the authorised observer; attendance alone is not evidence of competence.

Canonical programme practices in this session
  • ARRIVE led aloud before kitting up, as a pre-briefed and optional practice. Led for a group, including the debrief.
  • Readiness scan shared with colours — green, amber, red — and the answer respected. Led for a group, including the debrief.
  • Buddy agreement made with the five prompts, inside the agency's buddy check. Led for a group, including the debrief.
  • Five-channel scan carried out underwater as briefed, never during a task-critical phase. Led for a group, including the debrief.
  • One still minute at a stable point, when the situation allowed it. Led for a group, including the debrief.
  • FFLN debrief completed at the surface interval. Led for a group, including the debrief.

These practices are optional and pre-briefed: record whether offered and safely completed, declined or withdrawn. Never require participation or private feelings. The scan and still minute are offered only at a stable point, without controlling breathing and never during critical tasks; withdraw them as soon as the dive needs attention. Safe withdrawal is not a failure; any required evidence still missing needs another opportunity.

Use your invitation or course code

A personal invitation, centre place or Institute gift starts here. Sign in first, then enter the code from your email. No payment is needed to redeem it.

Center-sponsored codes share your name, progress and credential with the sponsoring center. A personal Institute invitation does not create a center affiliation. Your code opens only its included courses; practical sessions and assessments are arranged separately.

If your invitation includes books, use its download links or open Your books in the learning dashboard.

Your learning, at your pace

You do not have to feel calm or share anything personal to belong here. Pause whenever you need.

  1. Read or listen

Choose a comfortable text size or listen to the lesson. Reading settings let you adjust the space.

  2. Pause and reflect

Take what feels useful into everyday life. Personal reflection can stay on paper; follow the course guidance for any required portfolio.

  3. Check and continue

Try the module scenarios and read the feedback. Revisit a lesson whenever you need, then continue to the next module.

Optional study music

The Ocean Within · Nine Paths to One

The music of belonging

Our music carries the heart of MDI: arrive as you are, meet the ocean with respect, and carry care back into daily life. Technical learning and emotional awareness belong together, with connection to yourself, the water and life.

Listen, read the reflection or spend a moment in silence. There is no feeling to achieve and nothing personal to disclose. Listening is optional and does not affect course completion.

Listen on land, away from diving tasks. Breathe comfortably; you do not need to follow a musical rhythm or hold your breath. You can pause or stop at any time.

Original recordings in English and Spanish; reflections in your chosen language.

Carry the ocean into the ordinary

The experience continues in the life we return to. An unhurried conversation, a pause before answering or a kinder request for help can carry something of the encounter into an ordinary day.

Safety first

On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task.

Keep every practice within your training, agency standards and dive plan. Emergency procedures take priority. Anyone may decline a practice or end a dive. This is education, not therapy, medical clearance or agency endorsement.

Practice and professional scope

Complete the learning and assessments, then check your course's water verification, practicum and approval requirements. A completion record and professional teaching authority are different outcomes.
