The first Mindful Diving™ Specialty

Mindful Breath™

The first dive is a breath.

Divers already breathe more slowly than almost anyone on land. Mindful Breath™ turns that accident of equipment into a practice: a breath layer that runs through the whole arc of a dive, and then follows the diver home.

A specialty, not a level. Mindful Breath™ sits alongside the Descent pathway, MD-1 to MD-5 — it neither replaces a level nor skips one.

Specialty — optional, at any level

How it fits

One pathway. Five levels. Specialties deepen it — they never change it.

Your pathway is the Descent: MD-1 to MD-5. That does not change. A specialty is not a level.

Mindful Breath™ deepens one dimension of the practice — the breath — at whichever point you stand. It is never required to advance, and it never replaces a course.

If you dive, you already know this model: it works exactly like a specialty course in your diving agency. A specialty adds a capability. Your certification level stays exactly what it is.

The Descent — the pathway

  1. MD-1 Mindful Diver™
  2. MD-2 Advanced Mindful Diver™
  3. MD-3 Mindful Dive Leader™
  4. MD-4 Mindful Dive Instructor™
  5. MD-5 Instructor Trainer™

Five levels, in order. Unchanged by any specialty.

Specialty — optional, at any level

Mindful Breath™ — a specialty

Attaches at any point on the pathway — or before it.

  • Before MD-1 — you are not certified yet, and the breath is your first door.
  • Alongside any level — MD-1, MD-2, MD-3, MD-4 or MD-5, without pausing the Descent.
  • As a professional — a Divemaster or higher, or a certified breath teacher, taking the Guide path.

Complementary, both ways

With diving agencies

Your SSI, PADI, CMAS or RAID training governs how you dive. Mindful Diving™ adds how you are there.

With breathwork schools

Breathwork schools teach the breath. Mindful Breath™ teaches the breath in, with, and through the water. If you trained with the Wim Hof Method, Oxygen Advantage, SOMA, Respira!, a pranayama lineage or another recognized school, your training is honored here — the Guide path was built with you in mind.

What the evidence says

Twelve randomised trials, 785 adults

A meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found breathwork associated with significantly lower subjective stress than control conditions, with a small-to-medium effect (Fincham et al., 2023).

DOI 10.1038/s41598-022-27247-y

Five minutes a day, for 28 days

A Stanford trial in Cell Reports Medicine found that five minutes a day of exhale-focused cyclic sighing improved daily mood and lowered resting respiratory rate more than mindfulness meditation (Balban et al., 2023).

DOI 10.1016/j.xcrm.2022.100895

The evidence is promising, not miraculous. More rigorous trials are needed, and the authors say so themselves. Measured, not assumed.

The breath across the arc

Before · Below · Between · Beyond — the same four phases, read through the breath.

Before

The breath before the water

Nasal breathing, a lengthened exhale of roughly one to two, tolerance for rising carbon dioxide, coherence at about six breaths a minute, pre-dive grounding and a clear intention.

Below

Breathing on scuba

Slow, continuous breathing. Breath and buoyancy moving together. Air consumption read as a mindfulness gauge, never as a score.

Between

The surface interval

Recovery breathing between dives, reflection while the experience is fresh, and coherence restored before the next descent.

Beyond

Five minutes a day

The daily protocol on land, where most of life happens: the breath as stress regulation, and the one piece of the ocean every diver carries home.

Look at one for the length of three slow breaths.

White branching coral standing still in deep blue.
A squadron of rays gliding over pale sand below a lone diver.
A gentle boulder reef in soft turquoise light.
A lone boulder on a sand plain with sharks patrolling above.
A wide silver school flowing over a shallow reef.
Soft coral in green water beneath a curtain of light.
A diver hovering perfectly still in deep blue water with sunbeams above.
A green sea turtle gliding over a sunlit coral reef.

The Bridge

Breath teachers already know the breath. What they don't have is the water — the standards, the safety envelope, the way a briefing works. The Bridge is that crossing, in two steps.

The complete path for certified breath teachers: MD-1 (€111) + Mindful Breath Guide™ (€222) = €333.

For everyone else, MD-1 and Mindful Breath Diver™ together: €177.

If a credential can't be matched automatically, write to hello@mindfuldiving.org and we'll open the seat at the offer price.

The Founding 33

The first 33 Mindful Breath Guides™ in the world will form the founding cohort — a founding badge for life, and a name on this page.

It echoes the Founding 100 — the first centers to carry the seal.

The free door

Seven minutes, free for members. The smallest true piece of the specialty: practise it on land tonight and you will already know what the rest is made of.

One Breath Before the WaterOpen the practice

Safety is the first mindfulness practice

  • On scuba, the practice is slow, continuous breathing — never breath-holding, skip-breathing or hypoventilation.
  • Intense practices — strong ventilation cycles, long breath-holds, cold protocols — are land practices. Never immediately before a dive and never in the water: hyperventilation before immersion is a known factor in shallow-water blackout.
  • Every practice fits entirely within the diver's existing agency standards and dive plan.
  • Mindful Breath™ is never presented as therapy or medical treatment.
  • Reviewed by the Safety & Dive Medicine Board.

Questions

Is this a new level?
No. The levels are MD-1 to MD-5, and they do not change. Mindful Breath™ is a specialty: it deepens the breath dimension at whichever level you stand, or before you certify at all. It is never required to advance.
Do I need to be a diver?
No. Mindful Breath Diver™ is open to divers of any agency and to complete beginners. MD-1 Mindful Diver™ is recommended, not required, and the water session is optional.
Is this a breathwork instructor certification?
No. It is the ocean specialty layer: breath practice inside diving, within agency standards. General breathwork instructor training belongs to the breathwork schools, and we are complementary to them.
Can I teach after the Diver level?
No. Leading official Mindful Breath™ sessions requires Mindful Breath Guide™.
I'm a certified breath teacher — what's my path?
Your existing certification, plus MD-1 (€111) and Mindful Breath Guide™ (€222): the complete path, €333.
Is it safe?
On scuba the practice is slow, continuous breathing only — never breath-holding, skip-breathing or hypoventilation. Intense practices stay on land, never immediately before a dive and never in the water. Everything sits inside your agency standards and dive plan, and the curriculum is reviewed by the Safety & Dive Medicine Board.
How is it measured?
With the FP20 Fundamental Peace scale, taken before and after the practice cycle, and by Guides for the sessions they lead. Measured, not assumed.
How long does it take?
The Diver curriculum is about six hours online, plus the 21 Breaths cycle: one short practice a day for 21 days. The Guide adds about four more hours and two assessed sessions.
When are the first water sessions?
This November, in Cabo de Palos in the Mediterranean, and at sea in the Red Sea.
