MD-1 · Mindful Diver™

Bring your whole self to the dive.

Integrate the technical foundation of your diving with emotional awareness, presence and connection to nature. Across ten modules and two supervised water sessions, make room for who you are before, during and after a dive.

  • ≈ 2–3 h
  • 2 dives

Finishing online records MD-1 knowledge as complete; it does not certify you on its own. The MD-1 Mindful Diver™ credential also needs two supervised water sessions, observed against the published standards and arranged separately.

MD-1

Start here

MD-1 teaches practical skills for staying present, steady and connected on a dive — before you enter, in the water, between dives and back on land. You will learn a short pre-dive routine (ARRIVE), how to notice what you are feeling without being run by it, and how to speak up early with your buddy.

What you will be able to do

  • Run the six ARRIVE steps in about one minute before entering the water.
  • Separate what happened from the story you add about it, and name one useful next step.
  • Recognise early signs of nervousness or uncertainty and signal or speak to your buddy before they grow.
  • Accept that ending a dive is always a valid choice, for you and for others.
  • Observe marine life with more attention and less interference.
  • Review a dive with Facts · Felt · Learned · Next and choose one change for the next one.

How the course works

  • 10 short modules following the arc Before · Below · Between · Beyond.
  • Every lesson opens with an ocean photograph and connection. Objectives and a key idea lead into the full explanation, then practice, an application scenario and a final multiple-choice check.
  • Scenario checks let you test your judgement; they never count toward your result.
  • Two supervised water sessions with a Mindful Diving Center™ apply what you practised.

About 2–3 hours online: 23 required lessons and 9 optional tools, plus chapter checks and the final exam. Optional further reflection adds reading time. Then two supervised water sessions.

What you need to complete

  • Online (knowledge): complete all lessons, answer every chapter-check question correctly (retries allowed), and pass the final exam with at least 80% and every safety-critical question correct. This records MD-1 knowledge as complete.
  • Practical (water): two supervised water sessions with a Mindful Diving Center™, observed against the published MD-1 standards. The MD-1 Mindful Diver™ credential needs both parts. It never replaces your agency certification.

You can always postpone or end a dive

Anyone may delay, skip or end a dive at any time, without shame and without having to justify it. If your buddy signals to end, confirm and end together following the plan.

Safety boundary. MD-1 complements your agency training; it does not certify you to dive or replace any procedure, and it is not therapy. On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained — never hold your breath. No mindfulness practice during descents, ascents or gas management. Your dive plan and trained procedures always come first.

Practical plan: goals and checklist for each dive

Water Session 1 — Readiness & first presence

Learning goal: Prepare with a buddy and keep attention on safe diving.

Before entry: On land, offer ARRIVE and the readiness scan privately if preferred; agree buddy signals and the agency dive plan.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. Readiness scan completed on land, colour named (green / amber / red).

Observed evidence: Before entry, observe the readiness conversation and any agreed adjustment. Record the practical adjustment, not private feelings or a required colour.

  2. Continuous breathing through the regulator maintained throughout, as taught by the diver's agency — no breath-holding.

Observed evidence: Observe ordinary continuous regulator breathing during normal diving. Never ask for a slower rate, longer exhalation or breath hold.

  3. Situational awareness kept on depth, gas, buddy and direction, with attention returned to the dive's task priorities whenever it drifts.

Observed evidence: Observe normal depth, gas, buddy and direction checks; after a naturally occurring distraction, note how attention returns to the immediate task. Do not create a distraction.

  4. Buddy contact and signals confirmed before and during the dive.

Observed evidence: Ask the buddy pair to explain the agreed signals on land; observe a normal signal and acknowledgement in the water.

Canonical programme practices in this session
  • ARRIVE led aloud before kitting up, as a pre-briefed and optional practice.
  • Readiness scan shared with colours — green, amber, red — and the answer respected.
  • Buddy agreement made with the five prompts, inside the agency's buddy check.
  • Five-channel scan carried out underwater as briefed, never during a task-critical phase.

These practices are optional and pre-briefed: record whether offered and safely completed, declined or withdrawn. Never require participation or private feelings. The scan and still minute are offered only at a stable point, without controlling breathing and never during critical tasks; withdraw them as soon as the dive needs attention. Safe withdrawal is not a failure; any required evidence still missing needs another opportunity.

Water Session 2 — Integration

Learning goal: Combine the skills in a normal dive and choose one habit to continue.

Before entry: Agree one ocean-care action and the post-dive recovery plan; review the buddy agreement.

Checklist — what to observe and record
  1. Breath, buoyancy, buddy presence and ocean care combined in one continuous dive.

Observed evidence: Observe continuous breathing as trained, buoyancy control and buddy contact together; record one concrete example of maintaining the dive priorities.

  2. Respectful distance and no-contact conduct maintained.

Observed evidence: Observe clearance from wildlife and the bottom, including a change of route or position when needed to avoid contact.

  3. Surface interval used for the Between practice: recover first, reflect second.

Observed evidence: After surfacing, allow recovery, warmth and hydration before offering the Between reflection. Passing on personal reflection is respected.

  4. Integration plan named for diving beyond the course.

Observed evidence: On land, ask the diver to name one practical habit, when they will use it and how they will communicate it to a future buddy.

Canonical programme practices in this session
  • One still minute at a stable point, when the situation allowed it.
  • FFLN debrief completed at the surface interval.

Use your invitation or course code

A personal invitation, centre place or Institute gift starts here. Sign in first, then enter the code from your email. No payment is needed to redeem it.

Center-sponsored codes share your name, progress and credential with the sponsoring center. A personal Institute invitation does not create a center affiliation. Your code opens only its included courses; practical sessions and assessments are arranged separately.

If your invitation includes books, use its download links or open Your books in the learning dashboard.

Your learning, at your pace

You do not have to feel calm or share anything personal to belong here. Pause whenever you need.

  1. Read or listen

Choose a comfortable text size or listen to the lesson. Reading settings let you adjust the space.

  2. Pause and reflect

Take what feels useful into everyday life. Personal reflection can stay on paper; follow the course guidance for any required portfolio.

  3. Check and continue

Try the module scenarios and read the feedback. Revisit a lesson whenever you need, then continue to the next module.

From online access to certification

Your purchase activates the included learning. Certification requires completed learning, verified practice and the applicable assessment; attendance alone is not enough. PRO affiliation and teaching authorization are separate.

MD-1: 2 supervised water sessions in the published pathways.

What to agree with the center and PRO
  • MD-1: Entry pathway: online learning, required supervised water sessions and assessment by an authorized PRO.

Ask for a breakdown of online learning, instruction, logistics, taxes and extras; confirm who collects payment, the authorized instructor and weather/cancellation terms. If the package already includes your course, do not buy it again. Use your individual email for access and records.

The MD-1 to MD-3 certification fee is included for eligible center enrollments assessed by that center’s active, authorized PRO. Teaching is agreed separately.

The Ocean Within · Nine Paths to One

The music of belonging

Our music carries the heart of MDI: arrive as you are, meet the ocean with respect, and carry care back into daily life. Technical learning and emotional awareness belong together, with connection to yourself, the water and life.

Listen, read the reflection or spend a moment in silence. There is no feeling to achieve and nothing personal to disclose. Listening is optional and does not affect course completion.

Listen on land, away from diving tasks. Breathe comfortably; you do not need to follow a musical rhythm or hold your breath. You can pause or stop at any time.

Original recordings in English and Spanish; reflections in your chosen language.

Belong without possessing

The music’s image of an ocean within invites connection with a living world. We can feel part of it while respecting its other lives, its boundaries and what we do not yet understand.

The Ocean Within

A moment to reflect

How would I approach this place if I were a guest who wanted to care for it?

Be with another

Companionship begins with listening. We do not have to match another person’s breath or experience to be alongside them. Care includes asking what helps and respecting a different answer.

The Buddy Breath

A moment to reflect

How can I offer support without deciding for the other person?

Carry the ocean into the ordinary

The experience continues in the life we return to. An unhurried conversation, a pause before answering or a kinder request for help can carry something of the encounter into an ordinary day.

After the Deep

A moment to reflect

What one quality would I like to practise in a real situation this week?

Safety first

On scuba, breathe naturally and continuously as trained; never hold, skip or deliberately restrict your breathing. Keep attention on your buddy, buoyancy, gas and surroundings. Leave optional exercises out of descents, ascents and any demanding task.

Keep every practice within your training, agency standards and dive plan. Emergency procedures take priority. Anyone may decline a practice or end a dive. This is education, not therapy, medical clearance or agency endorsement.
