Introduction to Mindfulness

What it is, how it works, and twelve practices for before the water.

The Mindful Diving Institute's front door to mindfulness. Learn what mindfulness is and is not, how it works, what the best current research shows — with its limits — and twelve land practices you can use before any dive. Then take a careful first look at mindfulness in the water, the part MD-1 teaches with an instructor.

About 2½–3 hours at your own pace · six modules · twelve land practices with audio · no dive required

Educational completion · no diving qualification

This programme is Part 1 of MD-1 Mindful Diver™. Complete it here, free; when you continue to MD-1 it already counts.

Your learning, at your pace

You do not have to feel calm or share anything personal to belong here. Pause whenever you need.

  1. Read or listen

Choose a comfortable text size or listen to the lesson. Reading settings let you adjust the space.

  2. Pause and reflect

Take what feels useful into everyday life. Personal reflection can stay on paper; follow the course guidance for any required portfolio.

  3. Check and continue

Try the module scenarios and read the feedback. Revisit a lesson whenever you need, then continue to the next module.

What you will learn

  • A clear definition of mindfulness — and what it is not: relaxation, an empty mind or breath control.
  • How it works: the attention cycle, four mechanisms, and why acceptance matters.
  • What the evidence shows in 2021–2026 research, and where it is still weak.
  • Twelve practices for before the water, ARRIVE on the deck, and a first look at practice underwater.
